Tungsten carbide is a type of steel. It is
comprised of mainly tungsten carbide and cobalt. The cobalt acts as a
binder and improves shock resistance. As the percentage of cobalt in the
mix rises, so does the shock resistance. These materials generally
start as powders. A small amount of wax is then added to the mix. This
holds the materials together so they can be molded. The mix is then
placed in a de-waxing furnace overnight. It is removed and takes a more
chalk like appearance. (S1, p1) As a result of this, a material is obtained which combines high strength, toughness and high hardness.
